Our Q1 book for 2019 is Circe by Madeline Miller.
First things first: it looks like it would be pronounced "sirk" (like, circle) but it's actually pronounced "sirsee." Confusing, I know. (Maybe not confusing if you're super into Greek mythology, but hey, some of us are novices.)
Secondly: Circe was a Book of the Month pick, which means you can still create an account and get the hardcover copy from BOTM, for only $12.50. If you're interested in checking this out, click here.
And finally, from the author's website:
"In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child--not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power--the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves."
In case, like me, you're not good at memory things and so you get confused while reading, here's a handy cast of characters.
This book was a NYTimes bestseller, and has rave reviews:
New York Times: Turning Circe Into a Good Witch
The Guardian: Circe by Madeline Miller review – myth, magic and single motherhood
The Washington Post: The original nasty woman is a goddess for our times
I have a tangential recommendation: I love the podcast Let's Talk About Myths, Baby! It's Greek and Roman mythology, told by a feminist who has a degree in English Literature and Classical Civilizations. Perfect.
We'll probably meet toward the beginning of February, so you have plenty of time to read the book.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS & HAPPY READING!!!
